Be Prepared for Cold Weather: Tips and Helpful Info

As colder months approach, it’s important to take steps to protect your home from the challenges of freezing temperatures, particularly to avoid frozen or burst pipes. Here are some key recommendations to help you prepare:

Winterize in Austin Texas

Winter Weather Preparation Tips

  • Drip Faucets: Allow faucets to drip during freezing weather, but avoid running them in a steady stream. Continue dripping until temperatures rise above 40°F.

  • Open Cabinet Doors: Leave cabinet doors under sinks open to let warm air circulate around your plumbing.

  • Maintain Indoor Heat: Keep your home heated to at least 65°F. Never turn off your heat when temperatures are below freezing.

  • Disconnect and Insulate Outdoor Faucets: Remove garden hoses from exterior hose bibs and protect outdoor faucets with foam covers.

  • Locate Your Main Water Shut-Off Valve: Familiarize yourself with the location and operation of your home’s water shut-off valve. Check out our YouTube video for examples of water shut-off valves.

Be Prepared for Winter Weather Emergencies

Stock up on essentials such as bottled water, extra blankets, battery-powered chargers, and a radio.

Leaving Town?

  • Arrange for someone to periodically check on the property.

  • Turn off the water supply to your home using the main shut-off valve.

  • If you have trouble finding the homeowner shut-off for your property, contact a plumber to assist you. It may be buried under landscaping, or filled with dirt. Some shut-offs may need to be replaced depending on the age of your home. Here are some plumbers to call for assistance:
